Yet they so very nearly came away without anything, having to wait until injury time for the penalty decision which produced the goal that secured them a well-deserved draw.
For this game leading marksman Jamie Shaw played out wide on the left, wi
th Matt Lunn on the right, and this tricky pair were a real handful for the home defence.
Shaw, in particular, was in the thick of the action for much of the first half. He was twice denied by the Cogenhoe keeper, the second time his shot being pushed for a corner after a surging run by Shaw.
Although Town had the better of the first half exchanges, Cogenhoe had their moments and the home defence was pleased to see a well struck free kick fly over the bar.
Shaw again looked dangerous, cutting in from the left following a neat ball from Fenton only to be denied once more by the keeper, who also saved well from a Craig Stones' header.
It remained goal-less up to the break and after half time Lunn and Shaw switched wings and continued to give the Cogenhoe back line plenty to think about.
But it was the home side who eventually broke the deadlock 12 minutes into the half. Oliver Sidney part cleared the ball only for it to be blasted back into the net.
Cogenhoe then enjoyed a spell of dominance and pushed for a second.
Town brought on Bell for Lunn and the injured Sidney was replaced by Craig Machin.
A powerful break through the Sleaford defence by the Cogenhoe number three should have produced another score for the home side but the opportunity was squandered.
With time, and the game, slipping away from them, Town were awarded a penalty in injury time for a foul on Mickey Stones. Shaw made no mistake from the spot to earn a point for his side.
Town: Scott; Lovett, Jones, Sidney, Fenton; Lunn, C Stones, J Sedlan, Reece, Shaw, M Stones. Subs: Bishop, Bell, C Machin
Manager's comment:
TOWN boss Brian Rowland was encouraged by his side's performance at Cogenhoe.
He said: "We played a different formation but it is one we have used on occasions in the past.
"It seemed to work quite well and I thought we played more football and with greater confidence.
"The goal came very late in the game but we really deserved a point. It was certainly one of our better performances of the season so far and we need to build on that."
