ELEVEN-year-old Ben Jones beat the weekend weather to complete a personal challenge which he hopes will have raised over £1,000 for cancer charities.
Ben, from Heckington, organised his 3B Challenge to raise money for the Lincoln Oncology Department, Gifts Hospice and The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign.

He had planned to walk to Boston, sail to Skegness and then cycle home to Star Fen, but high winds and unsafe sea conditions ruled out the sailing part of the challenge. However, Ben was determined to complete a challenging three day event and ran to Boston from his home in Heckington on Friday, a total of 12 miles, and followed that with a gruelling 40 mile bike ride to Skegness from Heckington on Saturday and an even more challenging windy cycle back on Sunday.

Ben said: “The run was certainly the most physically challenging and probably the hardest part of the challenge, although the cycle ride back on Sunday tested all my endurance as we were cycling into a strong headwind all the time, which was exhausting.”

Ben still wants to undertake the sail to Skegness from Boston Marina when tides, weather and crew can be re-united but at the moment is very happy to have managed as much as he did.

Mum, Virginia Jones said: “He’s done so well and although he’s disappointed about the sailing, there’s not much you can do about the weather.”

The donations line will remain open all summer and the website will be updated in the next few days. To donate go to www.3bchallenge.co.uk or send donations to Lloyds TSB Bank plc, Northgate, Sleaford, Lincolnshire NG34.

The family would like to give a huge thank you to everyone who has helped and, in particular, to Nigel Stephenson at the gym at Carre’s Grammar School for helping Ben with his training.
