14/05/08 - Traffic lights: I think an apology is needed!

EDITOR-With reference to the story headlined 'You win' (Standard, April 30), Councillor Barry Singleton appears to take credit for the switch-off/removal of the traffic lights in Sleaford.

But is he not a member of Lincolnshire County Council, the very body which approved this disastrous project? I would have thought an apology and the names of the people being dismissed would be more appropriate.

The lights may well be deployed e
lsewhere in Sleaford (hopefully not by the same team) but the taxpayers have still paid four months of weekend working to the contractors (£30,000), and I guess more on top for disconnection etc. This will not be recovered and the pre October 2007 Sleaford traffic situation is unresolved.

Local businesses may have also lost revenue, as some residents have found shopping out of town less stressful.
With regards to the public consultation, just how many people responded and how representative were they as to the needs of Sleaford town? Why did the highways department, armed with this information, get this project so wrong, after all they are the paid professionals?

So the bottom line is that no one is accountable for the waste of taxpayers money and they will in all probability employ the same 'team' for the next good idea.
