STAFF and pupils at St Peter's Primary School in Dunston are celebrating after being assessed as outstanding by Ofsted and in the top five per cent of schools in the country.
Since the school's last Ofsted inspection in 2003, the latest report has identified that they have made outstanding progress and flourished in recent years.

In the 27 different grading categories, St Peter’s School has been judged as outstanding in 25 and good in the other two.

Headteacher Graham Boyall said: "This report is a reflection of the outstanding work of everyone connected with the school. This includes staff, governors, parents, volunteers and, of course, the children themselves."

The headteacher was cited as providing outstanding and inspirational leadership for the school and governors are forward thinking and experienced, bringing a wealth of different expertise to the school. The school was praised for its networking with other local schools to enhance learning.

Pupils' behaviour, social skills and attitudes are very good and pupils have high levels of enthusiasm, a thirst for learning and confidence in their ability to master skills.

The report states the school provides a good curriculum for all pupils that is enriched by an excellent range of additional learning activities, such as after school clubs including yoga, and visits to places of interest.

Pupils of all ages and abilities make excellent progress as they move through the school and the sense of community within the school is judged to be very strong. Those with statements of special educational need, a higher than average proportion in the school, are particularly well catered for and do very well.

Since the last inspection the number of pupils on roll has risen by 50 per cent to 69.
